Take Your Health to Another Level with Non-Negotiables

Take Your Health to Another Level with Non-Negotiables

There are very few things in my life that are non-negotiable. Most of them might sound silly to you, but that’s just who I am. However, there are a few health-related non-negotiables that might be practical to this audience.

These have nothing to do with dieting, trying to lose weight, trying to gain muscle, or anything like that. We’re all too wrapped up in outcomes. If these daily actions lead to better body composition, great. And if they don’t? That’s fine, they just make me feel good. When I miss a day, I can tell the difference.

Here are some of my health non-negotiables:

  1. Move 20 minutes a day: Everyday I dedicate at least 20 minutes to movement. My movement pool consists of weight lifting, yoga, mobility practice, biking, hiking, walking my dog, body weight training, kettlebell training, and sprinting. Everyday, regardless of what’s on my schedule or where I am, I will hit 20 minutes of movement.

  2. Eat 5 different fruits and vegetables a day: The more colors I incorporate into my diet the better I feel. It’s 8:00 am and I think I’ve already hit that quota: mushrooms, onions, broccoli, avocado, blueberries, raspberries, and sauerkraut. It takes some preparation, but the payoff for me is well worth it.

  3. Unplug: This one tends to be the hardest of all. Unplug from technology and just be. I’m obsessed with podcasts, I take my phone everywhere–and I mean everywhere–with me to not miss a second of my favorite sports, true crime, or news podcast of the day. But I know if I can turn off the noise and be in my head for 20-30 minutes a day, I am a better person. In today’s world, we could all benefit from some quiet time.

  4. Drink 100 ounces of water: For me personally, this is the most important. I suffer from migraines and they can be pretty debilitating. Anything I can do to stave off a migraine, I’ll do it. Unfortunately, I’ve suffered through my fair share and concluded that my hydration level is most commonly associated with my migraine headaches. So for me, water is a big time non-negotiable. Of course there are many other benefits to consuming appropriate amounts of water, but for me it’s keeping my head right.

I believe creating a short list of health-related non-negotiables is something everyone should do. By no means is my list better than anyone else’s, this is just what works for me. I hope you can use my lift as an inspiration to help you create your own.

If something makes you feel good, you should probably do it everyday!
